Built as a one-of-a-kind outdoor experience for a private residence, The Playhouse Project brought together landscape construction, themed design, lighting, sound, planting, water effects, and custom-built features into one immersive backyard environment. The structure included wood construction, large hollowed-out oak trees, rope bridges, slide, swing set, trap doors, a water wheel, hidden spaces, and multiple boulder walls designed to create an immersive experience.
From a design-build perspective, Pine Ridge Landscape took a highly imaginative idea and elevated it to the next level. The team integrated specialty color changing lighting effects that transformed the space with color. Installed speakers for music and sound effects, created 8 individual fogging zones that operate at the push of a button. This produces the illusion of a ship lost in the fog. Pine Ridge Landscape added privacy hedging around the property, and built a custom entertainment area for the adults to enjoy nearby. The result was a playful, technically detailed space designed for both children and parents.
Chad Clauson
Pine Ridge Landscape began with Chad Clauson’s early love for the craft. Long before earning his contractor’s license, Chad was gaining hands-on experience in the early 2000s — working at a nursery, helping local general contractors, and learning what separates a finished yard from a well-built outdoor space.
That experience became personal when he helped remodel his parents’ home and pool. The project turned out so well that neighbors began asking for help with their own yards, then friends of neighbors, and what started as a few outdoor remodels steadily grew into Pine Ridge Landscape.
In 2010, Chad earned his landscape contractor’s license and continued building a company rooted in craftsmanship, trust, and a deep understanding of outdoor construction. Many of Pine Ridge’s earliest projects can still be found throughout San Diego today — a reflection of the care, quality, and long-term thinking Chad has brought to the work from the beginning.
For Chad, landscape design-build has always been about more than making a yard look finished. It’s about creating outdoor spaces that feel intentional, function well, and turn a property from simply usable into something truly enjoyable.
